Tabi-tabi po! A review on a Netflix Pinoy Original animation TRESE

 by: Love Esios

A world where mythical creatures are perpetrators of gruesome crimes. A world where humans and the supernatural co-exist and try to find balance. That is the world of TRESE.

Here's my take on TRESE's debut:

☑️ The animation quality and aesthetic are incredibly superb.

☑️ I think it's awesome that the story features Philippine mythical and mythological creatures, even though most of them are the bad guys here. I love how the storyline reflects our reality these days like people in power hungry for more power and people blindly following them. The series subtly touches the subject of police brutality but immediately balancing it with the truth that there are still good and honest cops out there and that we shouldn't generalize them.

☑️ The fights scenes will make your adrenaline rush. I personally love that scene where Santelmo kicked that traitor's butt! 🔥

☑️ I love the color grading of the flashbacks. 👌🏼

☑️ The title sequence and the ending theme will give you different "feels". Goosebumps!

However, I strongly feel that the series can still be solid even without Liza Soberano. Her voice just doesn't sound natural in Filipino. Her character is tough, cold, and distant but with her voice giving it life in the series, it makes the character colder and more distant to the audience.

I also thought there’s something missing in the story. The "malaking unos" that they were establishing all throughout the story was not the "unos" I was hoping for. The ending left a lot to be desired. I thought it would be a cliffhanger but it was underwhelming. And the mythical creature shown in the Season 2 teaser was not of Filipino origin, wasn't it?

Nevertheless, if you grew up watching Eugene, Recca or Naruto, you’ll enjoy this series! Kudos to the entire Trese production staff!

Netflix, you might want to check the Filipino dystopian novel NAERMYTH. I believe the story is worthy of a movie or a series. 😉
